Kathmandu, september 29: Nepal Police has decided to provide free education from primary to postgraduate level to the children of police personnel directly affected by the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood.

The decision will benefit the children of 28 Nepal Police personnel who were directly affected by the disaster. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the Nepal Police Policy-Making Committee chaired by Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki on Monday.

According to Nepal Police Headquarters, the meeting made special decisions concerning education, livelihood support and long-term rehabilitation of police families affected by the Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa on Bhadra 10. Under the decision, the children of the 28 affected police personnel will receive fully funded education from primary level through postgraduate studies.

Inspector General Karki said Nepal Police would always stand by police personnel who sacrifice their lives or are affected while carrying out their duties to protect the nation and its citizens. He said the organization would provide necessary support for the education of their children and the rehabilitation of their families in recognition of their sacrifice, dedication and service.

Police Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Abhinarayan Kafle said protecting and supporting police personnel and their families affected while serving the nation is a responsibility of Nepal Police. He said the decision was aimed at addressing the education and livelihood needs of affected families in the long term while honoring the duties performed by police personnel under high-risk conditions.

Police Superintendent Dharmaraj Bhandari of Nepal Police Headquarters said skills-based and vocational training would be provided to other members of affected police families after assessing their needs and capabilities. He said arrangements would also be made to create employment and income-generating opportunities following the training.

Nepal Police said it would continue to prioritize the welfare of police personnel deployed on the front lines during disasters and their dependent families by strengthening programs related to education, employment, skills development and rehabilitation. The organization also said necessary assistance and protection would continue to be provided to the families of police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty or were affected by disasters.
